Description
n-Octyltriethoxysilaneis high purity, undiluted Noctyltriethoxy-silane. Whendiluted with anappropriate solvent, it can be used in the formulation of water repellentproducts. Upon proper application, the formulated product will penetrate andprovide water repellency by chemically reacting with the cementitioussubstrate. Treated substrates are hydro-phobic and retain their originalappearance.
n-Octyltriethoxysilanecan also be used to improve the compatibility of mineral fillers or pigments inpolyolefins or to ease their dispersion in nonpolar matrices.
n-Octyltriethoxysilaneis a small molecule to allow for deep penetration into the cementitioussurface. This material reacts with moisture in the air and n the substrate inthe presence of an alkaline or acidic environment to produce hydroxy groups.These hydroxy groups will bond with the substrate and tself to produce ahydrophobic treatment that inhibits water absorption into the substrate. Analkaline environment, such as new concrete, will catalyze the reaction andspeed the formation of the hydrophobic surface.
HOW TO USE
Dilution
n-Octyltriethoxysilanecan be diluted in solvents such as alcohols, chlorinated solvents, aliphaticsolvents and low molecular weight cyclic polydimethylsiloxane such as Cyclotetrasiloxanebefore use. Typical dilution levels are 40 percent and 20 percent n-Octyltriethoxysilanein a solvent.
Blends of thesolvents can also be used. The evaporation rate of the diluted material can bemodified depending on the type and concen-tration of the solvent. Select theproper solvent for your application, as some silane/solvent blends may darkenthe surface. Refer to the manufacturer’s data sheet for proper handling anddisposal of solvents.
Application
Methods ofapplication include airless sprayer, roller and brush. When a brush or rolleris used, repeated applications should be made until the surface remains moistfor a few minutes. If an airless sprayer is used, application should continueuntil the substrate is thoroughly saturated. Sprayers should be fitted withsolvent resistant hoses and gaskets.
A testapplication is necessary on each surface to be treated to ensure compatibilityand the desired water repellent result. Surfaces should be free of standingwater, surface dirt,dust, oils and other contaminants.
Formulated n-Octyltriethoxysilanemay be applied to damp surfaces although dry surfaces are preferred to achievemaximum penetration into the substrate.
